"Secraie" – no longer a secret
Professional wine tasting - Salle du Prétoire, Sézanne
The Côte de Sézanne is situated in the southern part of the Côte des Blancs wine region, and north of the Côte de Bar. It has a long documented history of winemaking and its microclimate and limestone subsoil bring out the best of the Chardonnay grape variety. To confirm the fact, 77% of the 1,479 hectares of vineyards are planted with Chardonnay.
The wine region is made up of 12 villages: Allemant, Barbonne-Fayel, Bethon, Broyes, Chantemerle, Fontaine-Saint-Denis, La Celle-sous-Chantemerle, Montgenost, Saudoy, Sézanne, Villenauxe-la-Grande and Vindey.
12 vignerons from the region created the association “Secraie” to promote the characteristics of their wines and the local terroir. Their first initiative was a professional wine tasting event held on 1 February 2015 at the Salle du Prétoire, Sézanne.
The quality of the Champagnes was generally high and it was interesting to compare the Chardonnay vertically (from north to south). 4 cuvées stood out in particular, but their names will have to remain a “Secraie” for now. Nevertheless, we hope to reference all the winemakers present in the area in the near future.
